Khama Billiat, once one of the most talked-about players in South African football, has opened up about his reasons for leaving Kaizer Chiefs. The Zimbabwean forward, whose high-profile move from Mamelodi Sundowns to Chiefs was one of the most expensive in the history of the South African Premier League, had a turbulent stay at the Soweto club, which didn’t seem to sit well with many fans.
Billiat is now playing in Zimbabwe's top league, a move that some view as signaling the end of his career at the highest level. Speaking on the MhlengiSports YouTube Channel, the football star explained that while Chiefs were keen for him to stay, his physical and mental struggles prompted his departure.
"I feel like it was time for me to move back home. They wanted me to stay, but I don't think I was mentally strong to take another season again, with all the injuries I was getting, all the pressure I was getting. It was frustrating," Billiat revealed.
He also downplayed financial reasons for leaving the Amakhosi, emphasizing that it wasn't about money. "I didn't mind the salary cut, I appreciate it. I would have stayed, but I just felt like it was too much for me to take, there was a lot going on."
Since his return to Zimbabwe, Billiat has already made a mark, scoring the only goal in a recent match against Namibia that secured a 3-point win for Zimbabwe in the first AFCON qualify match.
