Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand expressed his preference for the Saudi Pro League (SPL) over Major League Soccer (MLS) while showing support for his former teammate, Cristiano Ronaldo.
Ferdinand, known for his unwavering support of Ronaldo, commented on the differing reactions to Ronaldo's move to Al Nassr in Saudi Arabia compared to Lionel Messi's transfer to an MLS club.
"Look at how the media and people dealt with Messi going to America and Cristiano Ronaldo going to Saudi Arabia," Ferdinand said.He continued, "When a player goes to America, you greet him, but when a player goes to Saudi, he is attacked. Do you want to tell me that America is a perfect country?"
The former Manchester United defender made a bold statement, emphasizing his belief that the Saudi Pro League is superior to Major League Soccer. He further stated, "If I had not retired 100%, I would go to Saudi Arabia without thinking and without a doubt. The USA? No, the Saudi Pro League is much better than MLS."
Ferdinand's outspoken support of Ronaldo's move to the SPL and his comparison of the two leagues have added fuel to the ongoing debate about the relative quality of football leagues around the world. While both Messi and Ronaldo have made high-profile moves in recent times, the discussions surrounding their choices continue to divide football enthusiasts.
