Tensions between Cristiano Ronaldo and Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag have resurfaced, months after Ronaldo’s dramatic exit from the club during his second stint at Old Trafford. The Portuguese star, now playing in Saudi Arabia, has voiced strong opinions about United's leadership and direction under Ten Hag, further stirring the debate over his controversial departure.
During a recent interview with FiveUK, Ronaldo expressed frustration with Ten Hag’s perceived lack of ambition, suggesting that the Dutch coach should adopt a more competitive mindset when it comes to winning major titles.
"You cannot say that you're not going to fight to win the Premier League or Champions League," Ronaldo stated.
"You have to say, like, maybe we don't have the potential, but we're going to try. You have to try!"
Ronaldo also called for Ten Hag to seek guidance from Manchester United legends such as Sir Alex Ferguson, Roy Keane, and Ruud van Nistelrooy, noting their deep understanding of the club.
"You cannot rebuild a club without knowledge," he added, suggesting that these figures could offer valuable insight into restoring United’s former glory.
In response, Ten Hag defended his approach and dismissed Ronaldo's criticism.
"Cristiano said that Manchester United can't win the Premier League, if you read the article very well," Ten Hag clarified.
He went on to emphasize that everyone is entitled to their opinion, but added:
“Ronaldo is far away in Saudi, far away from Manchester. It’s okay.”
The public exchanges reflect lingering tension between the two figures, which contributed to Ronaldo’s premature contract termination with Manchester United late last year. Though Ronaldo’s second spell at Old Trafford initially brought excitement, disagreements with Ten Hag over playing time and club strategy led to a breakdown in their relationship, culminating in the mutual decision for Ronaldo to leave.
Ronaldo’s move to Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia marked the end of his time in the Premier League, but his recent comments suggest that his passion for Manchester United remains strong. Meanwhile, Ten Hag continues to lead the Red Devils in their pursuit of success, though Ronaldo’s words serve as a reminder of the club’s ongoing challenges in returning to the top of English football.
